She may have been paid less than her male co-stars in American Hustle, but Jennifer Lawrence will finish 2014 as the highest-grossing actor in Hollywood.
In Forbes’ list of The Top Grossing Actors of 2014 the 24-year-old Oscar winner came out on top, grossing a total of $1.4 billion for her films Hunger Games: Mockingjay and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
In early December a deluge of hacked emails from Sony revealed Lawrence and co-star Amy Adams were paid around 23 per cent less than their male American Hustle co-stars, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner.
The leaked emails highlighted what commentators have labelled “a troubling truth”, that all women, no matter their wealth or celebrity status, are still burdened by the gender pay gap.
Despite this, Lawrence’s success with her subsequent films have left her on top, and her good run looks set to continue. Next year she will appear in the final instalment of the Hunger Games and her first film following the popular series will see her working again with American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell in the film Joy.
Forbes ranked Chris Pratt second with $1.2 billion in global grosses. His films Guardians of the Galaxy and The Lego Movie were both surprise hits, with the latter grossing a total of $468 million at the box office worldwide.
Both films have spawned future sequel films.
In third, Lucy star Scarlett Johansson grossed $1.18 billion, earned predominantly through the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which grossed $714 million worldwide.
Mark Wahlberg came in at fourth, the highest-ranking star on the list with just one film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, while Johansson’s Captain Amercia co-star Chris Evans came in at fifth.
In ranking the actors Forbes looked at the global box office numbers for the films of each star.
