Based on a popular book trilogy by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games” is ready to hit theaters in the near future and just launched its first teaser trailer, a short snippet of action and a brief intro to our main character Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence).
Set in the apocalyptic future, “The Hunger Games” will tell a brutal story of survival as a young girl is forced to fight on national television for the enjoyment of people around the world.
Though the teaser didn’t give us too much information, we do get a sense that it will have plenty of action and explosions as Lionsgate looks to introduce us to the stark world of our hero Katniss.
Jennifer Lawrence, who earned an Academy Award nomination for “Winter’s Bone,” is a good fit and gives some hope that there will be some actual character development instead of just CGI and chaos.
“The Hunger Games” is also from director Gary Ross, who made a name for himself with movies like “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit.” This one isn’t going to be the next “Harry Potter,” but it could still be pretty big.
The trailer for “The Hunger Games” can be viewed at the movie’s official site. Box office outlook:
With a fairly large built-in audience, Lionsgate clearly is looking to make “The Hunger Games” a legitimate franchise. Though most franchise-hopefuls launch in the summer, the popularity of the book should be able to carry it at the box office and “The Hunger Games” could end up as the top box office draw of the spring.
