Emma Stone and J.Law’s Friendship Started With a “F*ck Off” Text

“We’ve been really good friends ever since…”

Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence, 2/3 of the Internet’s favorite Adele-Emma-Jennifer squad, came together in the most rom com of ways, Lawrence told Vanity Fair. Their mutual co-star Woody Harrelson (of The Hunger Games with Lawrence, and Zombieland with Stone) thought they’d be a good match and gave J.Law’s cell to Stone. “She texted me that she got my number from Woody,” Lawrence recalled. “I replied, Fuck off!’ And we’ve been really good friends ever since.”

They texted every day for a year after that intro, Lawrence said. “I feel like it was our version of The Notebook—365 texts.”

“She may not even know this,” Stone added in an e-mail, “but there was definitely a time early on when I was like OH HEY MY EGO IS GOING NUTS SHE’S SO GREAT AND VIBRANT AND TALENTED I’M SCREWED I’LL NEVER WORK AGAIN GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD.’ Then I chilled the fuck out—and remembered we’re completely different and there is room for everyone, even if it’s an industry that doesn’t really seem to support that idea up front. We both really do love each other and care about each other as people, beyond being actors. I support her completely when it comes to work and I feel the same from her, but I know we’d be friends even if we didn’t do the same job.”

In fact, their doing the same job brought them closer, Lawrence said. “Emma is so normal and lovely.”

Of Lawrence, Stone had this praise: “She has unbelievable clarity. She can witness a situation or meet a person and see through the entire thing almost instantly. It’s stunning.” Aww.

But, despite that bond, Lawrence made it clear she would not be Stone’s or anyone else’s bridesmaid if they asked. “Weddings rock, but I will never be a bridesmaid again,” Lawrence said, who’s done the deed four times now. “There needs to be a bridesmaids’ union. It’s horrendous. If anyone asks me again, I’m going to say, ‘No. That part of my life is over. I appreciate the ask.’ If I do ever get married, I don’t think I will have bridesmaids. How can I rank my friends?”

Marriage isn’t on the cards right now either. Her career is her main focus, and her love life is under the wraps now. The most she said about her rumored boyfriend, director Darren Aronofsky, was that “he is visionary” in his work.
